Mo Kong, Spices Politc, 2019

Ink, Essential Oil, Plexiglas, Scented Corals, 26 x 42 x 2,3 inches

Spice Politics is a work connected to the artist’s life. In fact, Mo Kong was born in China but has lived for several years in America. Kong’s visual exploration of his own research and journalism uses climate change as the lens of contemporary geopolitics, neo-nationalism, human migration, human rights and censorship, among other topics. In this case, the work explores the ownership of spices, the subject of contention in the US-China trade war, and their use within the two cultures. In short, it is a map that traces the origin of spices and from which the artist has drawn two special blends / fragrances that he has used throughout the cycle of works. The realization of these essential oils is realized in the observation of the stains on the paper, from which its olfactory state still remains lightly.
