Mariano Sardón, 1 Minute, 2022

4K resolution video, film and digital animation, looped video, about 20 min

The origin of the work was a study achieved by Mariano Sardon and Mariano Sigman as  a collaboration between artist and neuroscientist. The performed  study had to do with time estimation,  in this case particularly, they were interested in 1 minute duration time. Hundreds of people were asked to say “bip” in front of a video camera; estimate 1 minute duration and say “Bip” again when they considered 1 minute duration was passed. Hundreds of participating people were recorded and used those recordings for the  composition of a random superimposition of 1 minute silence durations. Inspired in John Cage’s compositions where silence was delimited by sound events; in this case; the silences  are due to the superimposition of the perception of 1 minute duration  for many people. In Chinese,  two characters 朝露 (Zhao Lù) define the ephemeral. Zhao Lu refers to the “morning dew” and in this metaphorical way, it also means the “ephemeral brevity of human life”. The contrast of scales between the short time of a natural event and the disturbing extension of our lives. After one minute, people are blown by a wind vanishing them in pixels. The ephemeral duration of life and the circumstancial constitution of the being were the inspiration source for these videos.
