Artericambi Gallery is proud to present the solo exhibition of the Netherland artist Sarah Verbeeek.

The vibrant paintings of Sarah Verbeek are full of contrasts. They are triumphant and quiet. Idiotic and well-considered. Unconstrained and repulsive, doubtfull and well-aimed. The opposites in Verbeek’s work do not cancel each other out. They all make their presence felt. Verbeek’s practice deals with the question: what is painting?

Always aware of the limitations and the possibilities of painting she works to go beyond what is possible on a two dimensional surface. For example, how to create light or movement in a painting. How to deal with three-dimensional form whilst stressing the limitations of this task in a two-dimensional world. How to deal with phenomena like depth and light that are illusions to the eye and that inevitably end where the canvas ends.

Often the forms in Verbeek’s paintings move in relation to each other. They do not necessarily overlap but they can bump into one another and influence each others shape. Yet when one does see forms overlapping, one is never sure which one is in front and which is in the back. Constantly shifting, atmosphere can become matter and matter become atmosphere. When one stands in front of one of Verbeek’s works meaning and form changes as the viewer recognises shape and depth. Painted holes can reveal a horizon but also act as eyes, looking at you, looking at the painting.
