CARLES CONGOST
Collection. Contemporary Art: 1975 – Present
Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
We are pleased to announce that the video work Un mystique déterminé (2003) by Carles Congost is now part of the new permanent collection COLECCIÓN. ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO: 1975 – PRESENT at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
The collection, which occupies the entire fourth floor of the Sabatini Building, offers a renewed narrative of the history of art over the past fifty years, beginning from Spain. It will open to the public on 18 February 2026.
The exhibition project seeks to highlight the contribution of Spanish contemporary art, taking as its starting point the complex 1970s, a pivotal decade for understanding the present as a collective construction and for reexamining the formation of democratic space from the beginning of the Transition to today.
The result of an intensive collective effort launched in 2023 under the direction of Manuel Segade, the new display reflects the sensibilities that run through contemporary society and artistic production, conveying the proliferation of languages, the diversity of media, and the material and semantic richness of practices developed in Spain and in dialogue with the international context.
The fourth-floor itinerary of the Sabatini Building presents historical works from the Reina Sofía Collections alongside recent acquisitions and current works by younger artists, with particular attention to the ways in which the Spanish artistic landscape has reflected social and institutional transformations between the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
